Government pledges 250,000 homes for London
Greg Clark has pledged to build 250,000 homes in London over the next five years – one quarter of all homes set to be built in England.
The Community Secretary’s pledge was made as MPs debated the Housing and Planning Bill at its second reading yesterday.
In September, the government promised to build 1 million homes by 2020.
Mr Clark said: “I want to go further, so that a quarter of all the homes we build in England are built in London during the years ahead. A quarter of a million new homes over the next five years.”
He added that he wanted the Right to Buy scheme to be a “major part” of the ambition and invited local authorities to strike a similar deal with government as it did with housing associations.
Mr Clark did not specify how many of the new homes would be for low-cost rent.
The London mayor has previously identified need for 49,000 new homes in Greater London, but identified capacity for just 42,000.
According to statistics published by the Department for Communities and Local Government, 18,260 new homes were completed in London last year. This is just 15% of the 124,520 built in England in 2014/15.
Over recent months, Boris Johnson has been negotiating with the government to ensure the Right to Buy extension delivers a large increase in London house building.
Speaking in the debate, he called for a “legally binding and funded” commitment from the government to ensure “two for one” replacement through the policy .

Si terrà a Birmingham il 27 e 28 Novembre, la National Engineering and Construction Recruitment Exhibition.
Si tratta di un evento dedicato a ingegneri e a professionisti del settore dell’edilizia che vogliano lavorare nel Regno Unito .
