Diploma and Degree Mills : Fake Pakistani Universities Named

The New York Times has exposed a network of diploma mills, controlled from Pakistani Headquarters, but operating in many countries.

The May 17 article is here:

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/17/world ... sites.html

This article names ~370 absolutely fake "Universities" (and "High Schools"), many of them claiming to be based in the USA, Europe, and the Middle East. The perpetrators are accused of outright selling degrees and diplomas, but then coming back and extorting more money from buyers by threatening to expose them publicly.

One could spend an amusing afternoon matching these fake schools with member names on LinkedIn – even on this Professional Engineers Group...

The diploma mill industry is huge.

In addition to its own diploma mills, India has a large number of worthless "Engineering" and STEM schools cranking out tens of thousands of "engineers" who have the degree title, but not the education and expertise of "real" western engineers. Barely a few dozen Indian Engineering Schools meet "western" standards.

Employers and "visa consultants" bringing engineers to the USA (and Canada) either don't know or, more likely, don't want to know — perhaps especially for H1b work visas.
It doesn't help that immigration officers in the USA (and Canada) are also often clueless about accreditation issues and education standards.
This work visa scam is well-known among immigrants from India, Pakistan, and elsewhere, who prefer to keep quiet about what they know to be true.

(Yes I know both India and Pakistan produce some excellent, world-class engineers, but also many ill-educated phony "engineers").

Owner of Pakistani Diploma Mills arrested:

"Iinvestigators arrested the chief executive of Axact, a software company accused of running a global diploma mill, early Wednesday after discovering a storage room filled with blank fake degrees."

"Axact’s online activities appear to have effectively shut down. Attempts by a reporter to contact sales agents at 221 of the company’s websites in recent days produced no response. Several of the fake accreditation bodies set up by the company, in a bid to bestow legitimacy on the universities, have gone offline."

"Pakistan has requested F.B.I. assistance because many of the universities run by Axact purported to be based in the United States, operated bank accounts and mailboxes there and sold fake degrees to Americans. Axact sales agents also sold State Department authentication certificates bearing Secretary of State John Kerry’s signature."

"Experts say that fake degrees can pose dangers to public safety and national security in many parts of the world and can enable immigration fraud. They can also have serious consequences for customers who are caught using them."

"Two former Axact officials, speaking separately, said that in 2009, an American married couple, both members of the United States military serving in Iraq, emailed Axact to say that they faced courts-martial for having presented academic credentials bought from a university run by Axact...An Axact manager instructed subordinates to block the couple’s calls..."

Riceviamo dall ' Engineering Council :

" The Chartered status originates from and may normally only be awarded by Institutions that have been incorporated under Royal Charter by the British Monarch, hence its prevalent use in the UK and Commonwealth countries, however such is the prestige and credibility of a chartered designation that some non-UK organisations have taken to issuing Chartered designations without Royal or Parliamentary approval."

Misuse of Engineering Council Titles

The professional titles, Chartered Engineer, Incorporated Engineer, Engineering Technician and Information and Communications Technology Technician are awarded by the Engineering Council. These titles may only be used by individuals with current Engineering Council registration. They are protected under our Royal Charter.

If you are aware of anyone using any of these titles, who is not entitled to do so, please contact us by phone or through our contact us form.

If you wish to check whether an individual is professionally registered, with the Engineering Council registration, please contact us.

Fraudulent Qualifications

There is a huge increase in the number of people claiming to hold academic qualifications - usually degrees or post-graduate degrees - which have not been lawfully gained through study and research. They have been bought from online 'universities' and 'colleges' which do not have any authority in their own country to award degrees.

These qualifications have no academic value and do not contribute towards demonstrating the requirements for professional registration with the Engineering Council. Anybody applying to a professional engineering institution using a fraudulent qualification can expect to have their application, at the least, turned down for this reason.

Ripeto ancora l 'ALLARME già dato più volte in questa Sede : il web è pieno zeppo di fake diplomas and degrees !

Prediamone una caso : The University of Western Pacific ( Hawaii-USA ) :

"University Western Pacific - Pacific Western University (Hawaii) was the name of an unaccredited university which was closed in May 2006 following a lawsuit filed by the State of Hawaii a year earlier ( + a civil penalty of $500,000. ) The State of Hawaii has taken legal action against more than 66 such unaccredited schools since the year 2000.
